For the sake of our values and the lives of our immigrant brothers and sisters, we must meet this unconscionable policy with more than outrage and hopelessness.
Now is the time to act.
As a parent, it is gut-wrenching to watch the news coverage of families being separated at our borders.
I want to be perfectly clear:
We are a nation of immigrants and we are greater for it. Parenting Journey unequivocally opposes needlessly tearing families apart and the inhumane, traumatic practice of putting children in cages.
Families thrive and create stronger communities when they are together. That’s why our Parents’ Bill of Rights, created by parents to uplift all families, affirms our commitment to passing comprehensive immigration policies that keep families intact.
After decades of partnering with families, we know that all parents want to do what is best for their children. Many of the families being devastated by newly enforced federal immigration policies are coming here in hope of a safer, brighter future. We wholeheartedly reject efforts by the Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Trump Administration to divert blame for their decisions to vulnerable immigrant parents.
For the sake of our values and the lives of our immigrant brothers and sisters, we must meet this unconscionable policy with more than outrage and hopelessness.
Now is the time to act.
Here are some helpful actions and resources that I want to share with you:
- Call your Congressperson and U.S. Senator and let them know that you oppose the Trump Administration policy of separating children from parents and that you want to see them lead in passing a comprehensive immigration policy that keeps families together. You can find out who represents you here; if you need a suggestion for what to say, the ACLU has a script.
- Join a protest in solidarity with immigrants in Massachusetts this afternoon or around the country on June 30.
- Access additional information and resources from the National Immigrant Justice Center, Immigrant Advocates Network, Unaccompanied Children Resource Center, ACLU’s immigrants rights website, or this Slate article highlighting many of the organizations fighting for immigrant families.
- Donate to organizations that are supporting immigrant children and families.
It’s more important than ever to harness the support and strength we share working together in a diverse, inclusive community. Together, we will chart a better future that supports families of all backgrounds. Thank you for your continued advocacy.
In partnership with families,
Imari Paris Jeffries
Executive Director
